The Low Down on “Down”

Down is warm and cozy and perfect for any bed. Go Green Bedding carries only the finest down products available. Our features brand is Down, Inc. To get you better acquainted with down, I got these down basics from their website.

“Down” Defined
Down is the undercoating of duckling and geese. A single unit of down is referred to as a ‘cluster’. Where feathers are flat with a quill, and two-dimensional, a down cluster is round, three-dimensional and resembles a dandelion pod. The shape of the cluster gives it loft - so it holds and traps air, keeping you warm.

Duck or Goose
Duck and goose are the species of down. The insulating properties are of equal value, however, the duck down cluster is slightly smaller than that of the goose down cluster. To compensate for this differential, higher fill ounces are offered to offset the disparity.

Down, Inc’s fills are cleaned using our DOWNGUARD℠ process, making the fill pure and odor-free.

Insulation Explained
Down warms without weight due to the fact that each down cluster traps more air for its weight than any synthetic fiber. Every ounce of down has millions of filaments that interlock and form a protective layer filled with air. Trapping the air keeps you warm, and the cold out.

Natural down provides three times the warmth per ounce versus synthetic fibers. A synthetic fiber will clump-up, creating cold spots. Down remains evenly distributed, and can be fluffed to remain loft. Due to it’s natural properties, down breathes and wicks moisture away from the body, keeping you warmer and providing restful sleep.

Sources for down:

Domestic White Down – Born and bred in the USA. They obtain the raw materials which are washed and separated to exact specifications using our DOWNGUARD process, and leaving the fills clean and odor-free. Fill power of 550.

Premium White Goose Down – Procured from the Far East, this item is washed and separated using our DOWNGUARD process leaving the fill clean and without odor. Fill power of 575 to 600.

Hungarian Goose Down – Hand-picked in Hungary from mature geese this fill is used mainly in our high thread count assortment. Fill power of 750.

Comforter Construction
Advanced construction methods are used in manufacturing our comforter shells. The quilted patterns used keep the fill evenly distributed and improve insulation. The “baffle wall” construction uses an inner wall of fabric joining the top and bottom layers of fabric which lets the down loft to achieve its maximum capacity.
Box-stitch and baffled box-stitch designs continue to be the most popular constructions.

Care for Natural Fill Products
Protect your bedding from direct sunlight, which may cause the fabric covering to fade. DOWN, INC recommends that you Dry Clean your down products professionally. Shake your down products every day to revitalize and re-fluff. For storage, cover and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.

Now that you know the basics, you can better select the down comforters and pillows that will work the best for your needs. Sleep happy.

Nursery Rhymes

There are some many nursery rhymes out there. I remember several:

“Rock a bye, baby, in the tree top. When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.

And of course,

“Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee, Lord, my soul to keep.

One that is especially popular now-a-days”

“Good night, sleep tight, Don’t let the bedbugs bite,
Wake up bright in the morning light
To do what’s right with all your might.”

The scary thing is that this last one is legitimate! Bed bug numbers are on the rise. They are not just in developing countries or impovrished neighborhoods, they are everywhere it seems. You want to make sure and protect your little ones (and yourself) from these vicious creatures.

The most important thing is to know where the mattresses in your home are from. It is best to buy new mattresses. You will not have to worry about bed bugs with these. Somina products are the top of the line! They are all-natural memory foam, made from soy-bean oil. The foam breathes with your skin and does not get hot and sticky like petroleum based foams do.  Made from lyocell, kapok, and elastic, the cover is designed to compliment the foam. Lyocell and elastic are natural products so you do not have to worry about sleeping on synthetic fibers. Kapok is a naturally bitter fruit that, when used in material, repels spiders, mites, fungus and such!

But if you choose to buy a gently used mattress for budgetry reasons or otherwise, be sure you purchase a mattress encasement. Protect-A-Bed’s encasements are designed to keep anything and everything that is already in the mattress there. They have a Bug Lock secure seal on the zipper. Be sure that you get an encasement, not just a cover. You want the entire mattress enclosed.

Nursery rhymes are supposed to ease your child into sleep, not stir up fears in the parent’s mind. Put those fears to bed by taking the precautions listed above.

Sleep Number Solution

Sleep Number beds are one of the hottest rages right now. I hear good things, but like to snuggle so I don’t want the ridge in the center of the bed. But that is personal reference. Talking to a dear friend who loves hers, she has had problems finding high quality twin extra long fitted sheets. The solution to that is here!

Go Green Bedding sells adult quality sheets. The majority of twin-extra long sheets available are targeted to college students. I remember my college days and the frequency with which I washed my sheets. The point being, the sheets i had in college were for college. After graduating, I have replaced all of those with nice sheets that sooth me to sleep with their feel.

Athens linens and Perla linens are sold individually. This means you can purchase two twin extra long fitted sheets and one king sized flat sheet. You are not left with extra twin top sheets and a king fitted sheet that do not work with Sleep Number Bed. Unless you collect mismatch sheets, this is the perfect solution. You order the pieces you need and know that they are the quality you deserve.

Mattress Encasement

Mattress Encasements work a lot better than mattress covers - that should go without saying. By using a cover that encases the entire mattress will ensure that whatever is in the mattress will stay there. This is extra important for dorm mattresses. The number of people who have slept on a mattress before you is countless - you definitely want to form a barrier between you and those germs.

Another benefit is the relief to your allergies. Dust and other allergens get caught in a mattress and can be released everytime you sit or lay on your bed. A mattress encasementwill keep these particles out of the air in your bedroom. Protect-A-Bed covers have a patented Bug Lock with Secure Seal on the zipper which is guaranteed to lock everything inside.

Once you enclose your mattress, it is done. With a mattress cover, you will end up pulling off a corner when you are changing your bed linens or can slip when you adjust your sleep position. This should be a one time chore, not one that is repeated every other week with laundry.

Somina Mattresses

Somina Mattresses are made from visco-elastic foam. You have no doubt heard of it by this name or being called memory foam. This type of foam was created by NASA to use in the seats astronauts travel in while being rocketed into space and returning there from. It contours to whatever presses against it - very cool stuff. That was 20 years ago; a product cannot stay current with technology and consumer demands without evolving, yet this area has not been addressed… until now.

Green bedding is a priority for consumers who are ecologically conscience and aware. That is where Somina comes in: it is the organic option for green mattresses. Instead of using petroleum (which is used to create the vast majority of memory foam mattresses on the market), Somina products are made from soy bean oil. Along with being a renewable source, they go a step further and use soy beans that are free from gene manipulation.

Soy bean oil has other advantages. First, it does not have the odor that is associated with petrol. When your mattress arrives, you will not have to open every window in your house to get rid of the smell like with other memory foam products. Moreover, this foam breathes. This means, instead of having the consistency of ear plugs (which don’t let anything through); they are more like your skin - with small openings. This characteristic will not trap in heat and moisture creating a more comfortable sleep climate.

Memory foam, without question, provides outstanding support, eliminates pressure point created while sleeping on a traditional mattress, and is incredibly comfortable. Somina was invented for beds not rockets. It is designed to continually conform to your sleeping position, with a quicker recovery time than petroleum based foam. In other words, when you roll over, the mattress will spring back up as you move. No valleys will be left in your void - they fill in almost immediately.

Somina mattresses are on the cutting edge of sleep technology. Until you sleep on one, you will not understand how different it is from the other visco-elastic mattresses on the market. Trust me.

Rest Your Head on a Somina Pillow

Every Somina pillow is contoured to provide support for your neck and head while you sleep. They are available in four different sizes, which is fantastic because we each have different proportions.

Pillows, including the Somina pillow, never crossed my mind until recently. It always took at least an hour to get my neck feeling good each morning and a good thirty minutes to get comfortable at night. Then I came across Somina products at work and was intrigued by how much my boss loved her Somina mattress and pillow. I decided to try the various sizes and got a medium. (Medium and Large are the most common sizes used.) I have been amazed at how attached I am to my Somina pillow. Before getting this pillow, I would just buy pillows on sale and replace them annually. Now, I travel with my pillow. My head and neck are immediately comfortable when I lay down and mornings are great!

Somina products are organic memory foam. I did not realize how important organic is until I realized that I could breathe better after I started sleeping on mine. Since they are made from soy bean oil instead of petroleum, they do not have that odor that comes from most memory foam products on the market. Also the cover is washable – so just unzip it, throw it in the washer and dryer, and you are good to go.

Pillow sizes are easy to decipher. Here is the breakdown: Small is ideal for children and adults under 5’3”. Medium and large fit most adults. The think to consider is your shoulder width and neck length. If you have broad shoulders go with a Large. If your shoulders are average, go with medium. Extra Large is best for adults over 6’3”.

Organic Bedding For a Good Night’s Sleep

It’s long been thought that the higher the thread count, the better the sheets — and therefore the better night’s sleep. But with the soaring popularity of organic bedding, it’s pretty obvious that the secret is out: Organic bedding is the way to go if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep.

A recent article in The Huffington Post got our attention: It was about getting “a green night’s sleep” with organic bedding. As the article points out, if you’re concerned about the environment and eat organic foods, why sleep on anything but organic bedding? Plus, we spend one-third of our lives in bed — having great bedding should be essential. Organic bedding isn’t just a smart choice for the environment. It’s also a
way to add serious comfort to your bedroom.

Soft and stylish, organic bedding is free of harsh chemicals and dyes. That’s wonderful news for allergy sufferers and those with skin problems. All too often, the chemicals and dyes in bedding can irritate the skin and allergies, but that’s certainly not the case with organic bedding since it’s made from natural fibers and organic cotton.

Organic Bedding: Organic Mattresses

The article goes over some green bedding essentials, the first being organic mattresses. Conventional mattresses, the article says, raise health concerns, since they’re often made with harmful chemicals. And because most people wind up buying a new mattress, the used ones are sent to the dump, where they’re just piling up. Having these bulky items — made up of harmful chemicals such as petroleum — sitting around in landfills is not good for the environment.

Organic mattresses like Somina mattresses are environmentally-friendly and are made of only natural materials like soy bean oil. Plus, they’re simply comfortable and ideal for people who suffer from allergies and skin problems. Somina mattresses support the body and actually repeal bugs, spiders and fungus because the mattress cover is made from Lyocell and Kapok fruit.

Organic Bedding: Sheets

Sheets are an essential part of organic bedding and are another mention in the article. After all, what better to complement an organic mattress than organic sheets? Available in a wide variety of colors and sizes, organic sheets are sure to fit in with anyone’s decor and offer tremendous comfort. Like organic mattresses, organic sheets are made of natural materials and are free of harmful chemicals and dyes. When it comes to organic bedding, organic sheets are just an unbeatable choice.
