Apollo Anniversary
Apollo’s 40th Anniversaryis this month. What a remarkable thing! Space travel doesn’t make headlines as it did in days past, but it is still just as exciting. The latest mission to space is underway and it makes me think about the products that are available because of the scientific advances of NASA, one in particular.
NASA needed a material that would cushion the astronauts from the unparalleled g-forces of launch and re-entry during space missions. In response the their request, a material was produced, that was called visco-elastic memory foam. There is no definition for the word visco, but the word is derived from viscous, which means gummy or pasty. Elastic means being able to return to it’s original shape after being deformed. You all remember the picture of the hand impression on the foam. If the material was pushing up against your body, it would immediately spring back when your hand was removed. The other quality, of visco foam, is that it’s temperature reactive. When it is heated, it becomes softer and when it is cooled, it becomes firmer. A body laying on the material will heat it, making it softer under that heated area.
This material made it transition to mattresses. It was revolutionary! A person is able to get the support they want with out worrying about the pressure created on the body by inner-spring mattresses.
The catch is it is made from petroleum and the odor is strong. It takes a few days at the least and a month or more at the most to get that smell out of your home. Also petroleum is a fossil fuel, which means there is a limited amount of it on the Earth.
Dr. Sass, inventor of the Somina Sleep System, did not like these two points and others. In response, he improved the design and modified it to be designed for sleep - not for rocketing through space. First he replaced the main ingrediant in the foam. Replacing petrol-oil with soybean oil solves two problems. Itf is a renewable source - meaning it is not harming to planet to make AND it does not have the odor!
Another improvement is the recovery time. With traditional visco-elastic memory foam products, the time it takes for the foam to bounce back is a while. With Somina products, you will not be left with a void when you roll over during the night. The original material is temperature reactive. So, in the winter it will take longer for the mattress to form to you and in the summer, it will provide less support. The improved Somina foam is not like that!
On this Apollo anniversary, take a minute to look up at the stars and thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to the mission. We all reep the benefits of the science behind it. Then order a Somina Contour Pillow and feel the difference design makes.
Austin Settings Success
Austin Settings was a success! Not only did the Austin Alumni Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma raise funds for ArtHouse and Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, but also our Somina Table was a huge hit!!
Our table was a Somina Mattress on a custom-made steel frame. The centerpiece included Somina Contour Pillows, Christy Organic Waffle Towels, a Pur Cashmere throw, and an Athens Sheet. Each place setting featured a piece from ARTSYer, a local artist who uses tempered glass to create her unique works.
National Bud Bug Summit
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a National summit on Bed Bugs April 14-15 in New York City. Bed bugs, as you have most likely heard on the news, are on the rise. They have been reported in almost every type of institution designed for sleeping - from hotels to dormitories to homes. The EPA Summit resulted in well thought out recommendations and procedures that will be reviewed and, once approved put into motion.
I appreciate the EPA having a summit to address this problem. And I am sure that parents of high school seniors are glad as well. Being well informed is a must when you are sending your child to live in a dormitory. The thing is that the recommendations and procedures will not have a direct impact on you for some time. So what do you do in the mean time? Keep reading and I will tell you.
The first thing to do is research the dormitory where your college freshman will be staying: see if there are any reports of bed bugs in that or any other dorm on campus. Before moving any of your items into the room, survey the space carefully for any signs of bed bugs. You should thoroughly clean the room now, before luggage and clothes and such are filling the space. The college will have cleaned the space, but to be sure it is up to your standards, vacuum every corner, the mattress and box spring. The Clean 2 Cordless Hand VAC + UV-C Air Sanitizer is ideal for dorm rooms. It is convenient for cleaning up any spills and the base continuously sanitizes the air .
Next you should use a UV-C Sanitizer Wand over every surface. This wand uses ultraviolet light to kills 99% of germs and bacteria. Now uses a mattress encasement on both the box spring and mattress. This will form a barrier between whenever is left on or in the mattress and your child.
These simple steps will ensure that your child will start out with a dorm room that is clean and bed bug free.
Somina Table
Have you every thought about using your bed as table? I’m sure most of you have enjoyed a snack while lounging on your bed. But we are taking it a step further. Go Green Bedding has partnered with The Home Spa of Austin, Texas to showcase the products we carry at Austin Settings.
Austin Settings is an annual event put on by the Austin Area Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma that brings together exclusive designers and merchants to creating festive and elegant table settings for the enjoyment of its guests –all benefiting Austin area charities. This year’s charitable beneficiaries are: ArtHouse and Dell Children’s Hospital.
Each participating business creates a table according to a sort of theme that is often related to their business. Our table will be a Somina Organic Mattress on an Iron bed made by a local blacksmith, GW Sills. Christy Waffle Organic towels will serve as napkins. Several other products will serve as centerpieces and placesettings.
